︳BIOGRAPHY

Nominated by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ezéchiel Amani Cirimwami brings to this candidacy over fifteen years of legal experience, including extensive practice at both national and international levels. His career combines service as a High Court Judge and Public Prosecutor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with active litigation before leading international courts and tribunals, including the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

He is currently Professor of International Law at VUB and lectures as a visiting professor at UCLouvain and the Royal Military Academy of Belgium. He has been officially nominated by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a candidate for election as Judge of the International Criminal Court, with elections scheduled for December 2026. Previously, he served as Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law, where he also acted as Associate Editor of the Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Procedural Law.

In addition to his academic work, he acts as counsel before major international courts and tribunals, including the International Court of Justice, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the East African Court of Justice. He also brings significant experience in treaty negotiation and drafting, notably as plenipotentiary delegate and member of the Drafting Committee during the Ljubljana diplomatic conference leading to the adoption of the Ljubljana–The Hague Convention. His work has been published in leading international journals and cited by the International Law Commission. He is the recipient of an award from the International Committee of the Red Cross.

His research interests span key fields in International Law, including International Procedural Law, International Dispute Resolution, International Human Rights Law, International Criminal Law, and International Humanitarian Law.
